ISO 27001 Implementation

Build an ISMS that works before the auditor ever sees it.

BCS supports organisations from gap assessment through ISMS design, documentation, implementation, internal audit and certification or surveillance-audit readiness — with emphasis on an information-security management system that operates in practice, not just on paper.

The challenge

Certification pressure can create documents quickly. It does not automatically create a functioning management system.

ISO 27001 implementation touches governance, risk, policies, asset and access practices, suppliers, incidents, monitoring and continual improvement. Programmes stall when scope is unclear, risk assessment becomes mechanical, evidence is left until the end or control owners see the ISMS as a compliance project owned by one team.

BCS helps connect the standard to the way the organisation actually operates, with practical ownership and evidence built into the implementation journey.

Implementation journey

From current state to certification readiness.

01

Current-state assessment

Identify gaps against ISO 27001 requirements, current practices and available evidence.

02

ISMS scope & design

Define context, scope, governance, responsibilities and the operating structure of the ISMS.

03

Risk & control alignment

Establish risk assessment, treatment and control applicability in line with business context.

04

Documentation

Develop the policies, procedures, records and management artefacts the ISMS genuinely needs.

05

Implementation support

Embed controls, ownership, evidence collection, monitoring and operating routines.

06

Internal assurance

Conduct internal audit activity, support corrective actions and management review preparation.

07

Certification readiness

Prepare control owners, records and evidence for external certification assessment.

08

Continual improvement

Keep the ISMS relevant through monitoring, review, corrective action and planned improvement.

Key areas of support

Implementation across the management system, not just the documentation set.

Gap assessmentStructured view of current readiness and priority implementation gaps.
ISMS designContext, scope, governance, roles, objectives, risk criteria and operating model.
Risk treatmentRisk assessment, treatment decisions, control selection and Statement of Applicability support.
Policy & procedure developmentPractical documentation aligned to real responsibilities and processes.
Internal auditIndependent internal assurance to identify gaps before external assessment.
Certification readinessEvidence review, corrective-action support and preparation for certification or surveillance audits.
Typical deliverables

The artefacts needed to operate, evidence and improve the ISMS.

ISO 27001 gap assessmentPrioritised findings, implementation actions and readiness view.
ISMS framework and documentationScope, policies, procedures, governance records and supporting management-system artefacts.
Risk and control documentationRisk methodology, risk register, treatment plan and Statement of Applicability support.
Internal audit and readiness outputsInternal audit observations, corrective actions, evidence gaps and certification-readiness support.
Business outcomes

An ISMS that supports assurance and day-to-day security management.

Clearer security governanceRoles, scope, objectives and responsibilities become explicit.
Better risk-control alignmentControls are connected to real risk treatment rather than implemented as a generic checklist.
Improved evidence readinessRecords are generated through normal operation instead of assembled at the last minute.
Continual improvementThe ISMS has a mechanism to learn from audits, incidents, metrics and changing conditions.
Who this is for

Useful whether the organisation is starting, recovering or maturing.

First-time ISO 27001 programmesOrganisations establishing an ISMS and preparing for initial certification assessment.
Stalled implementation programmesWhere documentation exists but ownership, evidence or operational adoption is weak.
Existing certified organisationsTeams preparing for surveillance audits, internal audits or major ISMS improvement.
Growing organisationsWhere customer assurance, market access or governance expectations require a more formal security management system.
FAQ

Common questions.

Does BCS issue ISO 27001 certification?

No. BCS provides implementation, internal audit and readiness support. Certification is awarded by an independent accredited certification body after its assessment process.

Can you help if we already have policies?

Yes. Existing documentation can be assessed, rationalised and improved. The objective is not to replace useful material unnecessarily.

How long does ISO 27001 implementation take?

Timing depends on organisational size, scope, maturity, available evidence and remediation effort. A current-state assessment is the right starting point for a realistic plan.

Do you guarantee certification?

No. Certification decisions belong to the independent certification body. BCS helps organisations improve readiness and build an ISMS capable of being operated and evidenced.

Can you support surveillance audits after certification?

Yes. Support can include internal audit, corrective actions, evidence readiness and continual-improvement activities between external assessments.

Build an ISMS that is ready for scrutiny because it works in practice.

Start with your current maturity, target certification timing and scope.
